Count words and characters as you write
Paste an article, email, caption, or draft into the text box. Counts update immediately so you can review the length of your writing without opening a separate editor. Use Clear text to start again.
What is included in the results?
- Words: runs of letters or numbers, with internal apostrophes kept together. Hyphenated parts count as separate words.
- Characters: Unicode code points, including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. Some emoji contain several code points.
- Characters without whitespace: the same character count after spaces, tabs, and line breaks are removed.
- Sentences: an estimate based on sentence-ending punctuation and nonempty passages.
- Paragraphs: nonempty text blocks separated by a blank line.
- Reading time: an estimate based on 200 words per minute.
Different publishing platforms can use different counting rules, particularly for URLs, emoji, and languages without spaces. If you must meet a strict platform limit, check its own counter before publishing.
Use the count to support your writing
A word count helps you plan an assignment or spot an overlong introduction. It does not tell you whether an article is complete. Cover the reader’s question first, then remove repetition and material that does not help them.
Does this tool upload my writing?
No. Counts are calculated in your browser. Your text is not sent to ContentRyter or saved by this tool.
